“Our Diversity is Our Strength!” Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada, LCI President

The FLW Lions Club was chartered 20 January of 1966 and has been a part of the worlds’ largest service organization since that time. The FLW Lions Club was one of the first Lions Clubs formed on a military installation. Currently, we are the only Lions Club that remains active on a military installation. The motto of Lions Clubs International is WE SERVE and the FLW Lions Club tries to live up to this motto. Lions Clubs International has 1.3 million members and is located in 208 countries and geographical areas. This is more countries and geographical areas than the United Nations. We are just one club of 46,434 clubs worldwide. For additional information on Lions Clubs International visit the website: www.lionsclubs.org and tag it as one of your Favorites. The FLW Lions Club is very active on the district and state level with four active Past District Governors (PDG) and several members serving on District and State level committees. On 30 January 2016, the vision, hope, and dream of our 25 Charter Members were realized as we joyously and successfully celebrated our FLWLC 50th Anniversary Program at the Pershing Community Center on Ft Leonard Wood.

We are proud to announce in local media outlets a listing of our current ongoing activities that will continue for Lionistic Year 2016-2017 that will begin on 1 July 2016. Your support can help us achieve this year’s goal to be a better Lions Club than in the previous years. Come, share, join and enjoy being a new Lion or support us in any way you can, remembering that our aim is to take care of others within our greater Fort Leonard Wood Community. Your little bit will mean a lot to us!

The all new digital LION Magazine is now avvailable. Read the June and past issues now, LionMagazine.org

CHECK THIS OUT>>> Please, don’t throw those used eyeglasses away! The FLWLC continue to collect gently used eyeglasses. These glasses are taken to a collection point, cleaned and calibrated. They are given to eye doctors who go on missions to third-world countries and are given to those who need the eyeglasses. If you have used eyeglasses, feel free to give them to any of our Lions Club members or drop them off at a local eyeglass center and let the staff know they are being donated to the FLW Lions Club. Please pass this information to your family, friends, and coworkers. Local Drop-Off Points: GLWACH EENT Clinic, Pulaski County Courthouse Main Entrance, Main Exchange Optical Center. Request an eyeglasses pickup through flwlions@hotmail.com.

29th Annual Peace Poster Art Contest For Youth. The theme for the 2016-17 Peace Poster Contest is "A Celebration of Peace." The FLWLC proudly sponsors Peace Poster Contests to highly encourage our local boys and girls (ages 11-13) to celebrate peace through art to express their visions of peace. Help the FLWLC to encourage our local students to share their individual talents when the 2016-2017 Lions Club International Peace Poster Art Contest goes active and announced by the Art teachers at all participating schools. To see the Peace Poster achievements children have completed in the past, please visit http://www.lionsclubs.org//EN/our-work/youth-programs/peace-poster-contest/peace-poster-contest-finalists.php.

The Mission Statement of Lions Club International: “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs.”

Volunteers and Visitors are always “Welcome” to join us at any of our FLW Lions Club meetings and community activities. And, we strongly encourage everyone to bring a friend! We also ensure that your Volunteer information for our events is listed in the Volunteer Information Management System (VIMS) for future references. Let us help you to do what you want to do for our great community!

Join us for a free, informal, and fun social engagement to kick off of a productive new year. I am so excited to be the Simbi Chapter Captain for Pulaski County Missouri. Simbi is a great way to exchange services with the world without the use of money. Simbi is free to join, easy to use, and it's fun. During this event I'll be giving out info on the online Simbi community. The online environment is one of the best ways to stay connected in today's busy world. As a group we'll be meeting once a month on the second Saturday of every month. Meeting up in person is also nice because you get to meet all kinds of talented individuals. Who knows they just might be the person that can help you with the niche job you need done. It's also a great place to meet and exchange services with your local Simbi Chapter members. It's a great way to advertise or exchange goods and services with your community. Hope to see you there! I look forward to meeting you and sharing this exciting way to build strong communities.

We all know that when the temperature goes up, the opportunities to gather for a race go down. So we decided to invite all our friends, and our soon-to-be friends, to get together and celebrate Christmas in July with a 6-hour endurance race!! But don’t worry, you can come for 30 minutes, 3-hours or stay for the entirety because this race is absolutely free!! We are, however, accepting donations to benefit Operation Christmas Child. You can donate a few dollars or pack your own shoebox and bring to the race. Details can be found at: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/
The race begins at 6:00 a.m. on July 28th and ends at 12:00 p.m. On this shaded 7 mile crushed gravel loop (we will also have a 3-mile loop option) that runs alongside the Big Piney River just off Old Route 66 , there will be one fully stocked aid station and one with water only so be sure to bring a portable hydration device. Plan to stay afterwards and cool off in the water!
A prize will be given for the best costume and for the overall male and female finishers (those with the most miles). And let’s not forget the best prize. For those opting for the longer loop, there will be a prize given to the Queen and King of “the hill”, aka the gargantuan hill at the turnaround - the person traversing it the most times gains our respect and a special surprise.
So make plans to join us!!

“An Evening with General Grant” takes place in the parlor at Mount McGregor cottage where Grant lived out his final days. Grant had just finished his memoirs and reminisces about his life. Author and publisher Mark Twain gave Grant a $25,000 advance to write his memoirs. Grant completed the manuscript just three days before he died. Sales of the work during the next two years provide $450,000 in royalties.

Wayne Issleb portraying Grant takes you on a journey from his young years to the very end, back to the cottage where he has just days to live. Grant narrates his most important moments in life, which eventually brought him to the presidency. Dressed in a blue frock coat and epaulets with three stars on the shoulders, a black slouch hat and carrying a cigar, the Kenosha, WI man looks like the general who led Union troops to victory and became America's 18th president.

While serving as a reenactor in the 36th Wisconsin Civil War Infantry squad, Wayne had let his beard grow out and decided to don a bow tie and officer’s slouch hat. His fellow living historians noticed a strong resemblance between Issleb and Grant. In 2010 in a small town in Wisconsin Issleb fully embraced the role of the Union General. Soon after, three other living historians joined up with Issleb to complete Grant’s portrayal throughout his career.

Wayne has great admiration for Ulysses S. Grant, “He is a true hero to this country and people need to know who he was and the struggles he overcame. He was a true family man and put his family above everything.” He enjoys teaching history as I recreate U.S. Grant in modern times. “I hope the audience sees Ulysses when I perform.”

Wayne studied Grant extensively, including years of research and artifact collecting. Issleb owns several authentic Grant items, including original writings and a cigar stand ashtray that Grant possessed during his presidency. Not one to rest on his laurels, he continues to learn about Grant, walking in his footsteps at Vicksburg and Galena.
